Virtual Reality Based ADHD and Neuropsychological Assessment Systems
adhd

The aim of this project is to analyze the fields of application of virtual reality in the field of ADHD (Hyperactivity and Attention Deficit Disorder), Based on our research, we have chosen two main applications: 1) Virtual reality as a tool in the assessment and diagnosis of this disorder; 2) Virtual reality as an intervention and treatment procedure. In this case, virtual reality will be implemented as the sole technique or as part of multimodal programs that can be implemented in combination with cognitive behavioral techniques or neurofeedback. The virtual reality testing provided by FOCUS, through quantifiable measures of cognitive symptoms collected by scales such as the EDAH, and through third-party direct observations of child behavior, will complement each other and increase the accuracy of the clinical diagnosis of ADHD. The system will analyze a child’s behavior in the context of a virtual classroom. This tool will initially be perceived by the child as a game, in which the child performs a task while being presented with distractions typical of a classroom. The tests will assess (via a motion sensor) factors that determine the presence of ADHD, such as sustained attention, impulsivity, divided visual and auditory attention, excessive motor activity and tendency to scatter. After the test, the system will produce an assessment report that will help the clinician to perform a more accurate and reliable diagnosis.

R&D Qualification R&D Qualification: Many scientists and primary care physicians and therapists in the fields of health and rehabilitation worldwide are adopting these technologies for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of ADHD. Applying the tests in the virtual classroom environment to the patient and comparing the results with other test methods is a new issue.

With the outputs of this project, we aim to gradually apply the technological progress in the field of virtual reality and high-tech devices to ADHD patients for accurate diagnosis and drug-free treatment/rehabilitation. 1. The required features will be patient-specific and tailored to meet the patient’s needs 2. The consistency between stimuli will be easily programmed. 3. Feedback can be collected immediately from the patient and corrections can be made accordingly in a timely manner. 4. All patient behavior and performance can be fully recorded. To create an interactive virtual classroom, a virtual scenario, tables and chairs, blackboard, projection screen, virtual students and teachers and others will be used to simulate the classroom environment of the test takers.

2) Based on the VR system mentioned above, the auditory and visual tests on attention and cognitive function, including listening test, CPT test, executive test and visual memory test, will be incorporated into the virtual scenario and take place within the system. Meanwhile, the virtual goggles will be used to record the rotation trajectory of the examinee’s head. External distraction events will be added to create distraction effects to the environment at different levels of intensity to verify the attention and cognitive function of the person affected by distraction during the tests.

3) After analyzing the test results, it will be verified whether the system can effectively identify ADHD patients and in the next stage the system will be used in the treatment of ADHD patients. In addition, the performance of the system will be compared with traditional paper testing tools, the level of confidence will be tested and the acceptability of the virtual technology will be measured among the accepted ones.
